Parks Commission Recommendation - Gig Harbor Sports Complex

The Parks Commission has provided their recommendation to City Council and Mayor Kuhn regarding the Gig Harbor Sports Complex… Read on

Exciting News!

Late in 2017, the Gig Harbor City Council approved the purchase of 11.5 acres north of the YMCA and south of Costco to be developed as “All Season (turf & lit)” sports fields and to also add acreage to provide more park amenities. The deal should be completed this week. This $3.5M purchase, combined with the purchase of the Gig Harbor Little League fields back in September, provides our youth and active adults the space for a true major regional sports complex.  The City has now accumulated almost 30 acres for this park (outlined in blue in the image)…much of which will be All Season fields.  We should all be very excited at the possibilities!  But, it is not certain.

Moving forward, we need your help!

November’s election brought sweeping changes to the makeup of the City Council and a new Mayor, raising questions about the City’s commitment and plans for the project, including the number of fields that would be built.  Harbor Soccer is working with other community sports groups to urge the new Mayor and City Council members to move forward with a sports complex project that is responsive to the needs of the community.

Whether you live inside or outside of the city limits, you will have an opportunity to help make this project a reality.   The first opportunity to weigh in will be at the City Council meeting this Monday, February 12 at 5:30 PM when the Council will consider approving a contract to fund the design of the Sports Complex.  The meeting agenda is available HERE (location: 3510 Grandview St, Gig Harbor).

We could use your help.  Would you be willing to attend Monday’s meeting or subsequent meetings where the fate of the project will be decided?  Would you be willing to send an email to the City urging them to move forward with this critical project?

If so, please email Michelle Matheson (michellematheson3938@comcast.net) with Harbor Soccer so we can follow up with updates and easy taking points you can use to provide comment at public meetings, send via email, or share on social media.  We need these officials to understand how important these new fields and youth soccer are to our kids!

Thanks for your help and Go Harbor!

Updates & Information

2/15/18

Subject:  Monday’s City Council Meeting and Gig Harbor Sports Complex

Thank you to many of you who sent emails and attended the Gig Harbor City Council meeting to urge the council to move forward with the development of a master plan for the Gig Harbor Sports Complex.  We all know how badly our community needs these additional fields and Monday’s decision was a key step in the process. The Council did approve the consultant contract for the master plan and several council members made encouraging comments about the fields project.

Mayor Kuhn mentioned that they had received numerous emails in support of the project and several Harbor Soccer parents offered compelling comments during the council during public comment time – thank you!    As noted in a Gateway article following the vote, the intent is to finalize the master plan ahead of a May 1 deadline for submitting a grant application to the state.

We understand that the contractor will organize meetings to gather public input on the project.  We have reached out to the city to learn more about the timing and format of those meetings.  Once we learn more we will be sure to share it, but we do expect a continued need to express public support for moving forward.

If you haven’t already done so, you can email Michelle Matheson (michellematheson3938@comcast.net), a volunteer with Harbor Soccer’s Board, if you would like to be notified of future opportunities to support the project.

Thanks again,

Harbor Soccer Board
